Amamoor Creek Camping
Amamoor Camping area is such a cool spot. This is was the 3rd time I’d camped here but the first time in the Creek Camping area - home of the Gympie Music Muster (which is on the bucket list). The other spot is the Cedar Grove Camping area is where I’d been to before. If you’re looking for green grassy paddock, surrounded by native trees with creeks flowing past and awesome view of the stars / milky way then Amamoor camping area is definitely worth a shout.
Getting to the camping area is also a bit of fun. Once you’ve you’ve come into the adorably quaint town of Amamoor follow the main road onto Amamoor Creek Road (you can’t miss it as the main road through the town turns into it) all the way until you literally have to stop because you’re in the camp site. Along the way you pass by neat rural properties while crossing the Amamoor Creek about 9 times - potentially impassable during flood times but all are built up with concrete road crossings.
Now for all you non-4wd owners I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is you don’t own a 4wd (how elitist is this guy!). The good news is you don’t need one to get to either of Amamoor’s epic camping spots. Access is from the tarmac main roads onto a well manicured gravel road all the way into site - no hectic 4inch lifted v8 twin turbo noise monster required.
Booking is through the Queensland Parks Website and both campsites are first in best dressed or no designated spots and you congregate around the strategically placed fire rings. Depending on the time of year and whether it’s a long weekend or a normal weekend will depend how far away your neighbours are. I’ve been there when we have hardly been able to see our neighbours and when we’ve been a bit uncomfortably close with our neighbours. This is the one downside of these campsites. You can get packed in. Unfortunately there really isn’t a neat trick, besides being a bit strategic with what time of the year you book, for getting a nice lonely peaceful spot.
Amenities include non-potable water (can’t drink the stuff but you can use it to wash your pots and pans) and a toilet block - flushing! for all you ladies - or gents (we be inclusive here…). No showers, but there is a cracking river to swim in that lets you wash them pits out. Can confirm it does get a bit cold winter time, but is refreshing as anything, especially if you’re trying to chasing after the hair of the dog.
Location is about 2hours north of Brisbane. West of Noosa, directly South of Gympie and in the middle of both. As I said above, it is essentially the end of the road, but very close to Kandanga, Imbil and Kenilworth - all towns are worth exploring while you stay in and around Amamoor camping areas.
